| Kitchen wiz returns | | Posted Thursday, December 28, 2006 1:09:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | Seems many of you have been wondering when Sing Chun, the culinary wiz who made Sumhay Restaurant such a favorite with Chinese food fans, would be getting himself back into the kitchen. Well, your prayers have been answered, as word has recently reached our ears that he's the driving force behind Fortune Cooking, a charming little dinner destination tucked into a strip mall in the city's furniture district. Actually, "little" might not be quite the right word for it, as Fortune Cooking's dining room is pretty expansive, including a mini-lounge area with a walk-up bar and plasma TV. Bypassing that section, your DD and company requested a setting for four, though larger parties would be advised to take advantage of the lazy-susan-equipped round tables positioned in the centre of the room, the pale walls of which are adorned with cheery framed art.... | |

"It can be anything," said Sherk, who started selling his finds by launching Web sites and opening Tower Wholesale in an old Hamburg car dealership two weeks ago. "It creates a buying frenzy . . . People walk in and they didn't know they needed that." New stores and Web sites such as Sherk's offer discounts of 20 percent, half off, and sometimes more on the returns and past-season leftovers of big retailers - an old-style trade that has proliferated with some help from the Internet.... | |

| | | When your cat shuns the litter box | | Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 11:15:10 PM by Blog57 Team | | One of the most frequent questions cat owners ask is what to do when a pet suddenly loses interest in using the litter box. No matter how much someone loves their pet, it is hard having an animal in the house that eliminates inappropriately. Here are 10 things to try when you don't know what else to do: 1. Have your cat checked by a veterinarian. While urinary tract infections, kidney issues and diabetes are more obvious physical problems that can cause poor litterbox habits, just about any ailment that causes a cat to feel uncomfortable could be causing the problem. In older cats, arthritis can make a cat unwilling to jump even the smallest lip to get into a box. Treat the cat as per your vet's instructions ask about pain relief if you sense your cat may be having issues but no obvious cause is found.2.... | |

| | | Cosy dining | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 7:04:51 PM by Blog57 Team | | SENSUAL may not be the right word, but it was the first one that came to mind as we walked into Mzza Nott Italian Restaurant and Sushi Bar. This must have been because of the deep bossa nova tunes and the earth-tone furniture set against rustic purple walls, which screamed of an affair yet to be had. Ours was just about to begin. We were ushered to a booth at the far end of the restaurant. The fact that the place was sparsely seated afforded us with a lot of privacy. Apart from the Japanese guests who were enjoying their dinner in a booth next o ours, we could hardly make out the other diners who were lost in the dim lights emanating from the lanterns hanging from the ceiling. In the cosiness of the booth, we began to scan the menu for things worthy of our latest gastronomical adventure.... | |

| | | Art, antique center to open in Delhi | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 6:57:10 PM by Blog57 Team | | DELHI -- First they stripped away the aluminum siding. Then workers for Second Nature Painting and Restoration set about chipping off a layer of crumbling stucco. Beneath it all was the dignified faade of a mid-19th century building and a faded trade sign: "Jackson and Mason Furniture and Undertaking." "In those days, the furniture makers were also the ones making wooden coffins, so the combination of the two businesses wasn't unusual," said Viviana McCarthy, owner of Delhi Art and Antique Center on Main Street, which will open at 11 a.m. Nov. 11. Like the original enterprises that operated on Main Street in Delhi, the center will be a collaborative effort, bringing together a number of antique dealers downstairs and two art galleries upstairs. It will also bring foot traffic and life back to a historic downtown building that has sat vacant for almost a decade.... | |

| | | Staples founder sees a play in Rec Room | | Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 7:01:31 PM by Blog57 Team | | A Boston venture capitalist who founded Staples Inc. and built it into a $14 billion office-supplies superstore chain is giving his financial seal of approval to a small Chicago-area retailer. Tom Stemberg, venture partner at Lexington, Mass.-based Highland Capital, has bought a majority stake in Algonquin-based Rec Room Furniture & Games, installed a new chief executive and taken two seats on its board of directors in hopes of creating another national merchant. Rec Room has three Chicago-area stores--in Algonquin, Downers Grove and Deerfield--and one in Naples, Fla. "The next thing is we want to expand in our current markets," Stemberg said. It's actively trying to add three to five stores in the Chicago area, particularly eyeing the south, west and far north suburbs, and at least a couple of additional locations in Florida.... | |
