"It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce to you that Kitty Scott's Furniture is going out of business," owners Wendy and Paul Scott said in a letter sent to customers this week. There are no plans to relocate the business. Contacted by phone Wednesday, Wendy Scott said the couple simply decided to retire. She also said their son, Ryan, was not interested in keeping the business, which has been around for more than 50 years. "He is changing fields," she said about her son. Instead of looking for another buyer, Scott said they plan to liquidate their inventory and sell the building at 685 S. Yonge St. Kitty Scott's had been listed as the ninth largest in Volusia and Flagler counties with a showroom of 25,000 square feet, but probably dropped to 10th with the opening of the new Ashley Furniture Homestore on West International Speedway Boulevard....

Harrow Stores Inc., owner of the 10-store Harrow's pool, outdoor and Christmas products retailer with nearly 80 years of operation in the region, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will begin liquidation sales as early as this week. In a bankruptcy court filing last week, Harrow's listed assets of $5.3 million and debts of $11.2 million, with $3.6 million in inventory. The filings say Harrow, which bills itself as the region's largest retailer of above-ground pools, spas, grills and outdoor furniture, has suffered after two local rivals, Poseidon Pools and Treasure Island Inc., closed in the past year. Liquidation sales by those companies drove down market prices, impacting Harrow's profits, the company said. ....

Clear Channel Piques JCDecaux Interest

Outdoor advertising company JCDecaux is interested in acquiring its main U.S. rival, Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, the Paris-based company's chief executive said in an interview published Wednesday. "Combining Clear Channel (Outdoor) and JCDecaux would create one of the few global media companies in the world with a lot of potential growth," Jean-Francois Decaux said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "Of course, we're interested." JCDecaux, which sells advertising space on public transportation and its own street furniture and billboards, has been in talks with at least two of the private equity consortia interested in buying Clear Channel Communications Inc., the financial daily reported. Clear Channel controls the outdoor advertising unit through a 90 percent stake....

Chautauqua heightens the Boulder experience

BOULDER, Colo. -- A full moon rose over the jagged Flatiron Mountains on our last night at the Colorado Chautauqua. The air was warm and still, and we hiked up above Chautauqua's narrow streets and quiet cottages. Boulder glittered below us, spreading out to the plains. Set in the foothills above the city, a mile south of downtown and on the edge of the Rocky Mountains' Front Range, Colorado Chautauqua is 26 acres of living history, a remnant of a nearly forgotten national movement. From our vantage point on that clear night, the contrast between the serene Victorian Boulder of Chautauqua, and the bike commuting, organic farming, triathlon running, bustling Boulder of 2006 was starkly evident. In 1874, on the breezy shores of Lake Chautauqua in northern New York, Lewis Miller, an Ohio businessman, and John Heyl Vincent, a Sunday school director, founded the New York Chautauqua Assembly....

Live outdoors year-round

As the rain and the cold come, there are a brave few who choose to keep their backyards in regular use. While a good patio cover is a safe prerequisite, you still might wonder: Why? Frank Raethke of Outdoor Kitchens would suggest cooking. The company he founded over three years ago makes custom outdoor furniture with cabinet storage and housing for appliances such as grills, sinks and refrigerators to create fully functioning kitchens that can stand up to the elements. "The idea is to be able to keep enough outdoors to entertain for the day without having to go back inside," Raethke said. Unlike a grill inset in stone or masonry, Outdoor Kitchen's islands are completely modular and can move with the owner from home to home. While in practice, an outdoor kitchen will see most of its use in warmer months, cooking technologies such as infrared burners in the high quality grills used by Outdoor Kitchen are keeping many cooks out year-round....

Room with a view

When Tim and Megan Eggena built their home on Lake Harding four years ago, they knew that their favorite room in the house would have crisp outdoor air for two of its walls. Nestled into an exterior corner of their home, with a second-story room above, a brick wall on one side, a rock wall on another and an unobstructed view of Lake Harding on the two open-air sides, the Eggenas' outdoor living space is one of the most lived-in "rooms" in the house. It features a fireplace, a 27-inch television, an outdoor refrigerator, comfortable outdoor furniture, lamps and a rug -- all with enough aesthetic appeal to rival an indoor living room. Potted plants, including mums and snapdragons and other greenery, accent the room and framed art hangs on the one brick wall. There's even a mantle above their fireplace, salvaged from the old cabin the Eggenas tore down when they built their home....

Modern updates, useful designs highlight offerings at fall furniture show

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Familiar forms received furniture-style face-lifts at this year's International Furniture Market here. A little tweaking can turn an old, tired look new again. But you won't get a close-up of these fresh faces until spring when they arrive in local showrooms. Manufacturers doing makeovers included Martha Stewart, whose design team took inspiration from her favorite chinoiserie secretary and modernized the motif. The result is the Kingsland chinoiserie, which will retail in the neighborhood of $3,100. No more pagodas on this Asian-influenced piece. Hand-painted gold swirls on the bottom half represent a pond while the top shows blossoms over the water. The interior got a 21st-century update as well with a sliding keyboard access tray. It was part of Bernhardt's Martha Stewart Collection from Katonah, the name of her farmhouse north of New York City and her newest residence....

JCDecaux SA, one of the world's largest outdoor advertisers, said Wednesday that third-quarter sales rose 11 percent on demand for transport advertising. Sales climbed to euro436.3 million (US$548 million) from euro393.9 million in the same period a year earlier. Organic sales, or sales excluding acquisitions, rose 8.3 percent the company said, without disclosing a specific figure. JCDecaux said earlier this month it won a 15-year contract to provide tramway furniture and self-service bicycles for Marseille Provence Metropole. Last month, the company bought German rival VVR-Berek for euro103 million (US$129.3 million) from German transport company Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe. "This progression reflects a strong revenue improvement in billboard, further double-digit growth in transport revenues and sound advertising revenue growth from street furniture," Chairman Jean-Charles Decaux said....

(AFX UK Focus) 2006-10-24 11:35 GMT: Paris City postpones award of bike-hire/ad contract after JCDecaux objection

PARIS (AFX) - The city of Paris said it is to postpone the award of its rental bicycles and outdoor advertising concession on a judge's instruction, following a legal challenge over the selection process by JCDecaux, which is competing for the contract with partner Publicis Groupe. It said it will now await a decision by the judge scheduled for Nov 9. Last week, JCDecaux said its Somupi joint venture with Publicis asked the Administrative Court of Paris to review the award of the contract, claiming the procedure was "legally fragile." Somupi is vying with Clear Channel for the concession. In a statement, the Paris town hall said following the launch of the tender process in February a ruling by France's Council of State in May "altered the jurisprudence relating to a purely formal aspect" of the procedure....
