| | | A modern day manger | | Posted Sunday, December 24, 2006 2:57:38 PM by Blog57 Team | | "I'd like someone to adopt me and my baby." It's not the typical answer for a teenage girl questioned about the one thing she most desires for Christmas. At 14, unwed and only weeks from giving birth to a baby boy, this young girl is no ordinary teen. She's a child soon to be raising a child of her ownand among the lucky. In a quiet, older neighborhood on the east side of Lewisville sits a nondescript, modest, one-story, older residence. To most it's just a house among many. However, for a fortunate few it's a refuge from the hard, cold world and inviting accommodations among a mountain of heart-shattering rejection, even family eviction. This little, white-painted, framed building is a rental house turned maternity home. And like the Christmas story it provides shelter for expectant mothers when there's no room to be found.Twin beds situated in three cramped bedrooms provide rest for weary expectant mothers forced out on their own.... | |

| | | Ohio sues USA Baby stores | | Posted Sunday, December 17, 2006 12:59:11 PM by Blog57 Team | | Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro has sued the former and current operators of three Northeast Ohio USA Baby stores, including one on State Road in Cuyahoga Falls. The suit, filed Monday in Columbus, charges that the stores failed to deliver merchandise to customers, failed to provide refunds for undelivered items and provided substandard customer service, violating the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act. Petro asked the court to order the defendants, Midwest Baby Group, to make restitution to consumers who have been damaged by the stores' alleged violation of consumer laws. He is also asking for civil penalties of $25,000 per violation. The attorney general also wants a judge to order Midwest Baby Group to limit the amount of money it requires consumers to put down as a deposit on special orders.... | |

| | | Martha Stewart dishes the scoop on dirt | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 2:55:45 PM by Blog57 Team | | Martha Stewart has delivered unto us useful, tasteful lessons about virtually every aspect of our domestic lives for nearly a quarter of a century. In print and cyberspace, on radio and television, she has preached the gospel of clothes keeping, pet tending, wedding planning, flower arranging, glue gunning, meal prepping, flea marketing and silver polishing. One might think she'd have nothing more to say on such subjects. And yet, the proselytizing continues, as her latest book - she has penned more than two dozen in what promises to be an endless bibliography - makes abundantly clear. "Martha Stewart's Homekeeping Handbook" enters the world with a whopping first printing of 500,000. (By way of perspective: A book is considered successful if it sells 50,000 or more.) Bestseller-dom would be a good thing, given that Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia reported a $25.2 million loss for the third quarter that ended Sept.... | |

| | | Mom, stop doing all the work | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 3:05:49 PM by Blog57 Team | | Question: How can I get my family to help with housework? I have a 9-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son and I recently gave birth to a baby boy. I end up doing things myself instead of arguing with them every day over who did which chore last. My husband doesn't help much either. I feel like crying all of the time, mostly due to exhaustion. Go on strike! Take care of yourself and the baby and leave it at that. Do nothing for the rest of the family. They may not care about messy rooms, unmade beds and dusty furniture, but they'll get tired of peanut butter sandwiches and dirty clothes. Another approach clean a room, then put up a barricade. If they want to use the room, they have to pay a toll or do a chore related to the room to use it. They'll figure out real quick it's all about teamwork.... | |

It allows her time to find and pay for the gifts before someone else grabs them up. Shes used the service for several years. But her holiday routine was sidetracked this year when the retailer announced that it was scrapping its layaway department Nov. 19. The decision has put the North Side shopper in a Christmas quandary. "With them taking away this option, Im not sure how Ill be able to do for my kids the way Id planned," Banton said while shopping at the chains Morse Road store. "I dont think its fair. What about those of us who dont really have other options? " Many dont. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, between 9 percent and 10 percent of American households are "unbanked," meaning they do not have a bank or credit account.... | |

| | | RICHMOND | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 3:18:19 PM by Blog57 Team | | A Richmond woman accused of torturing her 8-year-old son for nearly a year leading up to his death last week appeared this morning in Superior Court to hear the charges against her. Teresa Moses, 23, stood behind her attorney as she listened to the judge read the felony charges of torture and child endangerment causing great bodily injury. Moses, her hair neatly tied back and wearing a green-and-yellow Contra Costa County Jail jumpsuit, stood straight and appeared calm, her hands clasped behind her back. Her attorney, Demetrius Costy, interrupted the judge to ask him to stop reading the charges as the packed courtroom watched. ``I'm waiving further reading'' of the charges, Costy said. ``She's certainly aware of the charges against her.'' Judge John Laettner continued reading.... | |

| | | Haunted spots -- fact or fiction? | | Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 3:02:30 PM by Blog57 Team | | IN BYRON, the gutted, burned-out shell of a hotel stands blanketed in moonlight. In Antioch, leaves rustle in the trees of a dilapidated cemetery that stands in the shadow of a deserted old mine. With Halloween just around the corner, we asked Times readers to tell us about their favorite East Bay haunted spot or ghostly encounters. Here, we dig into 10 of those rumored hauntings, trying to separate fact from fiction. No. 1: Rose Hill Cemetery and Black Diamond Mines, Antioch The claim: Kathy Ives, 54, of Antioch, has seen the "White Witch" and heard wind in the trees even though the night air was still. But her most chilling encounter occurred when she and three friends parked a convertible Corvette near the mines. "We could hear picks and shovels digging and men talking in a strange language I was not familiar with," Ives recalled.... | |
