DUNEDIN - Their art is whimsical, yet stylish, just like the Garden Fairies themselves. The Garden Fairies, middle-age "girls," love creating home and garden art for fun and for sale. "This is a whole lifestyle for us," said Siobhan Nehin, 50, of Tarpon Springs. "The Garden Fairy lifestyle is having fun, not taking yourself too seriously and making cool stuff. "Our ultimate goal is to have a show on HGTV." Off-the-wall is what the artists are all about. "It's fun and functional," said Heather Richardson, 44, of Belleair Bluffs. Nehin added, "Just like us!" They have about 65 pieces of one-of-a-kind work on display at the Clay & Paper Gallery. The exhibit, "In Thru the Outdoors," features a surfboard bar and decorative room dividers with artwork of a garden water goddess and saltwater fish in a red coral garden....

Kick anti-social kids out of Garden of Eden

Q: My 8-year-old son is a poor sport. He's been asked to leave several sports programs because of rudeness to other players and disrespect to adults, but he doesn't seem to care. I think he's just not as sports-minded as his dad wants him to be. His teachers report that he is a bad sport if he can't be first to do whatever the class is doing. When other children make mistakes in class, he makes fun of them. What can we do to shape him up before he becomes the most un-liked kid around? A: First, you need to pull your heads out of the sand. It gives me no pleasure to tell you that you are not describing a child who is simply a "poor sport." As his teachers have told you, his behavior is a problem whether the context is or is not sports. Furthermore, this is obviously not a simple problem of not being "sports minded." Your son is exhibiting some very pronounced anti-social behaviors which are likely to worsen over time....

About $5000 worth of furniture and ornaments was stolen from Tranquil Café and Garden on Wednesday morning before the accused were caught and the objects returned on Friday afternoon. Three tables, 10 chairs, four concrete Japanese seasonal signs, a three-tier Chinese pagoda, a fountain, a medieval mirror and some concrete statues were stolen and a large fountain was damaged after the accused failed to move it. Owner and manager of the café, Heidi Worby was devastated to find what had been taken on Wednesday morning when she arrived at work. "It was devastating," she said. "It did make me sit back, not for very long, but it did make me sit back and think what I was trying to achieve. "Once you get over the fact that people have entered the premises and taken those belongings from you, you just have to move on with it ......

Learn basics of creating wall collage

Once you learn the basics of hanging artwork you can graduate to creating unique collage wall displays. Hanging one piece of artwork is easy compared to putting together a collection of pieces and hanging them in just the right combination and location to make the collage work. But to get there you must start with the basics to learn how to properly hang one piece of framed artwork. First, determine where the piece of framed art will hang. Eye level is a general rule. While you're holding the piece up to the wall, have someone else place a tiny pencil mark on the wall at the center of the top of the frame. Next, lean the picture against your legs and hook one finger of each hand around the hanging wire, as if your fingers are the hanging hooks. Have your helper measure: (1) the distance between your fingers; (2) how far down your fingers are from the top of the frame....

Nexo fireplaces have been launched in the UK by a company called Lazy Days Inside Out Living. With the pub smoking ban in mind, the aim is to extend those balmy summer nights to an all-year-round experience. Built to last, they are are constructed from steel-reinforced cast volcanic pumice, clad with natural stone quarried on the island of Mors in Denmark. They are weather resistant and, according to Lazy Days, have even been installed in Siberia! Tools for mere mortals: Vox and Google Reader
Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 1:06:59 PM by Blog57 Team
While an estimated 57 million blogs have been fired up, with a large portion now in hibernation or abandoned, blogging tools have been too obtuse and cranky for mere mortals, especially those who are over 30 and haven't drunk the digital lifestyle kool-aid. Vox is more user friendly than Six Apart's TypePad and Movable Type or WordPress (which is used for ZDNet blogs), and brings some much needed direct manipulation of objects on a page and easy integration with external sources, such as Flickr and Amazon. At some point, it will be difficult to draw the line between blogging and wiki tools as they evolve and general productivity software. I asked the Six Apart team about developing a wiki application, but they insisted that they will work with wiki vendors and have enough to do with advancing their enterprise and consumer blogging platforms....

State Sen Stephen Sweeney and Assemblymen John Burzichelli and Douglas Fisher are urging motorists and parents to take the usual precautions to ensure that children have an enjoyable -- and safe -- Halloween. With the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that children ages 5 to 14 are four times more likely to be killed on Halloween than any other night of the year through falls, being hit by a vehicle, or through other accidents, adults need to be extra cautious while children walk near streets or through intersections. The Third District Legislators issued the following outline of tips for Halloween safety: For parents Never allow children to go out alone after dark (start trick-or-treating early and return early)....

Furniture to dine for

These days, a relatively simple thing like adding or removing a wall between an adjacent kitchen can be the difference between a large, all purpose kitchen or a formal dining room. Older houses may have a formal dining room space that's used as a dining room - or an office, bedroom or computer games area. Newer homes run the gamut from large formal dining rooms to great rooms off the kitchen that serve the family with an entertainment center and more casual dining space for family and guests. The good news is, there is still appropriate furniture for either lifestyle. Kathy Richards, a sales associate with Gardiners Furniture in Pasadena, observes a trend toward a little bit of everything being sought by customers. "They may really want more formal furniture because they have a room they want as really more formal," she says....
