| Public records mired in archive mess | | Posted Monday, March 12, 2007 2:55:50 PM by Blog57 Team | | OREGON CITY -- When City Recorder Nancy Ide needs documents from the city archives, she sometimes goes outside to two metal storage containers plopped in a parking area next to City Hall. Other public records -- some from the 1840s -- are crammed into closets, shelves and storerooms throughout the overcrowded offices -- anywhere there's space. Oregon City may be an exceptional case, but in cities and counties across Oregon, old paper records are warehoused in bathrooms, hallways, former jail cells or stacked in buildings with unused furniture and machinery, where they can be damaged, lost or destroyed. Coos County stores some old court records in a former jail cell. In Polk County, documents are stacked in a structure known as Building 17, along with machinery, surplus equipment and "whatever you don't have room for in your office," said Polk County Recorder Valerie Unger.... | |

| | | No guest room? Not to worry | | Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 1:01:16 PM by Blog57 Team | | Most American homeowners — 78 percent — were expecting overnight guests at Thanksgiving or Christmas, according to a national survey from Olympic, a company that makes paints and stains. For homeowners without a guest room, having overnight guests can add to holiday stress. But Lisa McTernan, owner of an interior design firm in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., says thoughtful planning can diffuse stress. She and her family often entertain overnight guests without a guest room. "No matter who is staying over, we always start by letting them know that our home is now their home for their stay," McTernan says. "I believe that even more than accommodations, the welcoming aspect of the visit is of most importance ... One can feel very uncomfortable, even in the nicest surroundings, if hospitality isn’t included in the visit."McTernan says it’s important to know how much privacy a guest wants and needs.... | |

The outside spaces are ideal for recreational vehicles, boats, campers, vans and trailers, say owners Ken and Connie Henderson. The facility is fenced, lighted, under continuous digital camera security and is accessible by individual keypad code 24 hours a day. "Many areas no longer permit large-vehicle parking in residential areas," Ken Henderson said. The only other piece furniture in the room was a metal bureau opened to reveal an disorganized stash of office supplies. Michael Arcuri leaned forward in the chair and rested his elbows on his knees. Across the table Steve Israel, the Democratic Congressman from Long Island, tapped a pen on a blank notepad. .... | |

| | | Built for the high-tech household: Furniture for gear and gizmos | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 11:20:12 AM by Blog57 Team | | Finally, a piece of furniture that reflects how we really live. Imagine a cabinet/desk/console that recharges multiple cellphones, docks iPods and provides Internet access and data ports for laptops. This multitasking design is so new, it doesn't even have a name. But it's being touted as a command center for families and households because it organizes the overload of high-tech domestic gadgets and entertainment components piling up in America's kitchens and front hallways. In a period of weak sales for most home furnishings, manufacturers introducing lifestyle solutions for 21st-century living were the ones that drew attention at the High Point Market, the twice-yearly design powwow that attracts industry executives, retailers and journalists from around the world.... | |

| | | Furniture that says it's about 'me' | | Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 11:02:08 AM by Blog57 Team | | Among the sea of new collections and product introductions that debuted at the fall High Point furniture market, four Cs emerged: color, contrast, curves and, most importantly, customization. When the new furnishings arrive in stores next spring, consumers will find traditional furniture with energetic, yet feminine lines, youthful contemporary pieces with oval and other fluid shapes, and vibrant oranges, yellows and blues with luxurious and tactile embellishments, all within pieces that can be adapted to fit personal needs. In an appeal to Gen-Xers and other youthful consumers, furniture companies are allowing consumers to choose drawer fronts, to mix upholstery and to coordinate accessories. "The manufacturers recognized that this demographic wants to have a nice home, they have the money to spend, and they want (the furniture) to be made especially for them," says Jackie Hirschhaut, of the American Home Furnishings Alliance.... | |
